Education
After completing the last two years of his high school education in England on a scholarship, Babüroğlu earned a Bachelor of Science in Applied Engineering Sciences and Operations Research from the University of Sussex in 1977. He immediately began his post-graduate studies in Operations Research at Lancaster University in England. A year later, in 1978, he received his doctorate in Social Systems Sciences from The Wharton School, the business school of the University of Pennsylvania, in 1987, where he studied "Interlocking Systems and the Theory of the Vortical Organizational Environment."
Teaching
He has served as a faculty member at seven different universities and one research institute worldwide.
During his academic career, he has taught at seven different universities and research institutes in the US, Europe, and Turkey. He has taught business and strategy courses at West Chester and Clarkson Universities, change management at INSEAD, and socio-technical systems and change management at Bilkent University. He served as a senior researcher at the Work Research Institute in Norway and designed and conducted the EDWOR doctoral program at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology. He is currently a faculty member and Head of the Department of Action Research at Sabancı University.
Consultancy
Since the 1980s, he has continued to implement participatory methods, which he has been implementing internationally, in the private, public, and NGO sectors, by founding the company "Search Participatory Management Consultancy" in Turkey in 1995. Babüroğlu has completed more than 100 long-term consulting projects and implemented more than 1,200 participatory methods. Oğuz N. Babüroğlu, who introduced participatory methods to Turkey with the "Search Conference" in 1988, helped establish the "Search Conference" as a category for such meetings. Also in 1988, at the first Search Conference, he used the term "common mind" to translate the term "common ground" into Turkish, and this concept has become widespread in business and political circles. Prof. Dr. Oğuz Babüroğlu has combined his entrepreneurial vision with governance expertise in academia, business, and industry. As the Founder and Director of Mindport, he led Sabancı University's Executive Development Unit (EDU) for 17 years, designing and implementing innovative executive development programs. In the business world, he served as a Board Member at ETİ Gıda Sanayi ve Ticaret A.Ş. and as an Independent Board Member at TeknoSA İç ve Dış Ticaret A.Ş., contributing to digital transformation, customer experience, and strategic growth processes. He also served on the boards of CarrefourSA and Karsan, shaping strategic decision-making processes in the retail, automotive, technology, and food sectors. He leads the advanced research, innovation, and interdisciplinary collaborations at Sabancı University Nanotechnology Research and Application Center (SUNUM), where he serves as interim Chairman of the Board. He also contributes to the institution's strategic development and governance as a member of Yaşar University's Board of Trustees. Research
Baburoglu specializes in action research, participatory methods, new-generation universities, performance management, innovative institutional and business model design, future strategy planning, and conflict and deadlock management. In addition to his book "Educational Futures," published with Merrelyn Emery in 2000, he has also published articles in Organization Studies, Human Relations, Action Research, the International Journal of Action Research, Systems Practice, and Action Research. His last two publications were published after he developed the Screening Conference Method in conjunction with Participatory Constitution-making. He serves on the editorial boards of the Action Research Journal, the International Journal of Action Research, the Journal of Systems and Behavioral Science, and the Journal of Vocational Education. In recognition of his experience in the dissemination of participatory methods on national and international platforms and his contributions to the field through his academic work, Babüroğlu was granted the "Search Chair" within the Faculty of Management at Sabancı University. Awards
He received the AACSB (American Accreditation Committee of Schools of Business) EXXON Award for Innovation in Executive Education in 1989. He received a NATO doctoral scholarship from TÜBİTAK for the years 1978-1982, the Society for General Systems Research best paper award in 1986, the Goodland (England) Public Speaking Award in 1974, and an OPOS scholarship to study at a boarding high school in England for the years 1972-1974.
